Folklore is the expression of the popular soul.

Full of influences from various peoples and civilizations who colonized Sicily in the past years, which gave rise to a set of habits that are handed down to this day.

Sicilian folklore is rich and evocative, just think of the Sicilian cart, the Sicilian puppets, the Moor's heads, the storytellers who sing the songs of the popular tradition, the wind chimes and the particular sound it emits, the bright colors of the traditional costumes, the typical dishes, of Martorana fruit.

According to tradition, the latter together with the "pepacene", wax dolls made of sugar, were brought to children on November 2nd, the day of commemoration of the dead, by their deceased loved ones in order to chase away the sadness from their hearts with sweetness. of these preparations.

A distinctive feature of some folkloristic events is the link with religiosity and specifically with the patron saints of the cities, as in the cases of Santa Rosalia in Palermo, Sant'Agata in Catania, San Biagio in Comiso, San Giovanni in Vittoria and so on.

Another symbol of this colorful folklore is the Sicilian cart, emblem of the island and its rural culture. Mainly born as a means of transport, today it is instead considered a true work of art thanks also to the different models and styles present, different for the different areas of Sicily; There are also museums dedicated to carts such as in the provinces of Palermo and Catania.

One of the most famous Sicilian traditions is "The Puppet Opera", which consists of a theater with puppets where chivalric representations are staged such as those with Charlemagne but also concerning the lives of the saints. This tradition is so important that having been nominated by UNESCO as an oral and intangible heritage of humanity.

Another of the most famous Sicilian symbols are the Moor's heads, a decorative element that can be taken as an example for Sicilian ceramics, among the most renowned those of Caltagirone.

The story of the Moor's heads originates from a tormented love story between a Sicilian girl and a young Moor.

The man declared himself and the love was reciprocated between the two but when the young woman discovered that the man was already married in Arabia, she became furious and decided to cut off his head, which would have become a perfect vase for one of her plants herbs, basil.

From here, the popular cult of the Moor's heads was born, which has been handed down to this day.

All this represents only a small part of the Sicilian cultural heritage, priceless, appreciated and famous throughout the world.
